Death Sentence for Two Police Officers Upheld, Full Verdict Released

The International Crimes Tribunal has upheld the death sentence for two police officers and released the full verdict in connection with the killing of student Abu Saeed during the July 2024 uprising.

The Tribunal released this verdict on Sunday (June 14).

The two convicted individuals sentenced to death are Police ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy. The verdict also handed down life imprisonment and various terms of rigorous and simple imprisonment to several other defendants.

According to the case details, Abu Saeed, an English Department student at Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead on July 16, 2024, during an anti-quota movement in Rangpur. A video of him being shot while standing in front of the police with his arms outstretched went viral on social media, sparking intense reactions nationwide.

Following the incident, widespread protests erupted across the country, and the government eventually imposed a curfew to control the situation. However, the report noted that the situation did not come under complete control.

Subsequently, political instability escalated in the wake of the incident, leading to the fall of the then-Awami League government on August 5, 2025, amidst a mass uprising.

This verdict by the Tribunal is being seen as a significant judicial development in the highly publicized incident of that period.
