Masudur Rahman, Staff Correspondent: Intensive preparations are underway in the international arena for the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the highest policymaking forum in global politics. Set to commence on September 8, 2026, at the UN Headquarters in New York, this session is poised to mark a glorious chapter in Bangladesh’s history. This year’s session not only highlights the nation’s diplomatic success on the world stage but also generates unprecedented interest regarding the participation of Bangladesh’s head of government.
Prime Minister Tareque Rahman will lead Bangladesh’s high-level delegation at the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81). This will mark his first official participation and address at the UN General Assembly as the elected head of government of Bangladesh.
Diplomatic sources indicate that the Prime Minister’s global visit holds immense significance, set against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s new democratic and political trajectory. In addition to his address at the main session of the General Assembly, he is scheduled to hold high-level bilateral meetings with several heads of state and government. During the session, he will robustly advocate before the global community for Bangladesh’s ongoing transformation, sustainable development, and the rights of countries affected by the global climate crisis.
The most significant highlight of this year’s session is Bangladesh’s ascension to the top leadership of the United Nations’ primary driving force. In a recently concluded hard-fought and secret ballot election at the UN Headquarters, Bangladesh defeated a strong candidate from Cyprus to be elected as the President of the 81st session of the General Assembly.
Beginning this September, during its one-year presidency, Bangladesh will lead the world from the core of global governance. Upon assuming responsibility, Bangladesh has pledged to focus on six critical priority areas, including global peace, human rights, climate change, and the governance of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The current UN leadership believes that the 81st session is taking place at a time when multilateral diplomacy and the international system are under various pressures. During this session, world leaders will discuss highly crucial and sensitive issues such as accelerating progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the process for electing the next UN Secretary-General.
Overall, international analysts anticipate that the 81st session of the United Nations, beginning this September, will elevate Bangladesh’s standing in the international arena to a new and formidable height.
