Switzerland Makes History After 88 Years with Brilliant Knockout Victory

Switzerland has secured their spot in the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive time, defeating Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Concurrently, the Swiss tasted victory in a World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 1938, marking the end of their 88-year long wait.

Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead in just the 10th minute of the match. However, the unsung hero behind the goal was Johan Manzambi, who broke through Algeria’s defense with a brilliant solo effort from midfield, entering the box and delivering a perfect pass. Embolo then provided an easy finish from within the six-yard box, giving his team the lead.

Switzerland had another golden opportunity to score in the 81st minute. However, Raider, with an open net in front of him at the far post, sent the ball straight into the goalkeeper’s hands with a flick of his heel.

This marks Switzerland’s first knockout stage victory since the 1938 World Cup. Back then, they defeated Germany 4-2 to reach the quarter-finals but were subsequently eliminated after losing 2-0 to Hungary in the last eight.

Switzerland’s opponent in the Round of 16 will be determined by the match between Colombia and Ghana, which is scheduled for today.
